No More Passport Stamps at U.S. Entry: Check Your I-94 Instead

No More Passport Stamps at U.S. Entry: Check Your I-94 Instead

If you collect U.S. entry stamps, your passport is about to stay a lot cleaner. Under an October 1, 2026 Carrier Liaison Program bulletin, Customs and Border Protection will no longer stamp passports as a matter of routine at primary inspection, Live and Let's Fly reported after reviewing it.

Why the ink is disappearing

CBP frames the move as a way to cut processing time and costs while leaning harder on automation, mobile tools and facial biometrics, One Mile at a Time noted. Officers can still stamp in secondary inspection or in limited cases, for example an immigrant visa admission or a traveler who specifically requests one, though asking is not a guarantee. None of this is sudden. Stampless entry has been tested since late 2021, including at Houston's IAH, according to Reddy Neumann Brown, and Global Entry members already went unstamped.

Your digital record now does the talking

Your official proof of admission is now the electronic I-94 form, which lists your entry date, class of admission and "admit until" date. You can pull it, plus as many as five years of arrivals, from the official CBP I-94 site or the CBP app. One weak spot: CBP usually learns about departures from carrier passenger manifests rather than an exit check, so a land crossing, private trip or manifest error can leave a gap that looks like you never left. Importantly, the firm stresses that nobody's visa, status or permitted length of stay changes.

A quick habit after every trip

  • Look up your latest I-94 and travel history a few days after you land.
  • Make sure both legs of the trip show up and the dates match your documents.
  • Hold on to boarding passes until the record checks out, then save a copy.
  • If a trip is missing, collect evidence such as boarding passes and airline receipts, and ask a CBP Deferred Inspection office or a port of entry to correct it early.

Visa holders and people who regularly drive to Canada or Mexico have the most at stake, so this five-minute check is worth building into your unpacking routine.
